Travel and Planning
There are no roads to our wilderness location at Ardintigh Bay, Loch Nevis; The Highland Outdoor Centre/Loch Nevis Bunkhouse is accessible only by boat from Mallaig or on foot by walking along side Loch Morar. Mallaig and Morar in the West Highlands are easily reached by road and rail via the A830 along the scenic ‘Road to the Isles’ or by railway on the spectacular West Highland Line which stops at Morar and terminates 2 miles further along the line at Mallaig.
Arrive On Foot
To reach the Highland Outdoor Centre/Loch Nevis Bunkhouse on foot, first make your way by car/taxi or on foot to the end of the road a Bracorina on the north shore of Loch Morar at O.S. Grid Ref: 725.927, from where we can be reached by a 4 mile trek across the hills. Proceed East on the track along the Loch side for approx 1 hour to Brinacory and roughly 700 metres further along the track at O.S. Grid Ref: 758.912 Look up and you will see a sign for Ardintigh painted on a large rock directing you North East over the hill towards Ardintigh Bay, follow the white painted stones along the way to guide you. This takes approx 2-3 hours and walkers should wear suitable footwear and clothing. Let the adventure begin! Arrive by Boat
For non walkers, see details below regarding the Ferry, we can also provide a list of telephone numbers of boat operators who could transport you and your party from Mallaig to the Centre. To ensure availability, boat trips should be pre booked in advance of your visit.
Ferry - Western Isles
To reach the Highland Outdoor Centre/Loch Nevis Bunkhouse by sea you should arrive at the fishing port of Mallaig where you can board the Western Isles Ferry at 14.15 hrs every weekday (Mon-Fri only) from May to end of Sept and take a cruise along Loch Nevis to Tarbet via Inverie arriving at Tarbet at 15.30 hrs. Large Groups - Gypsy Rover
Groups By pre arrangement should arrive at the fishing port of Mallaig. On arrival the centre's own 30ft launch "Gypsy Rover" will be waiting in the harbour to transport your equipment and provisions up Loch Nevis to the Centre/Bunkhouse. The party then makes their own way to Bracorina on the north shore of Loch Morar, from where the centre/bunkhouse can be reached, see the heading Arrive on Foot for further info on how to reach us.
We would be pleased to advise self catering groups in planning a programme or an expedition to suit their requirements using our considerable knowledge of the area, Ardintigh Bay is shown on the Landranger Mallaig and Glenfinnan Ordnance Survey Map sheet number 40 and to include the Knoydart area you will need the Landranger Loch Alsh, Glen Shiel & Loch Hourn Ordnance Survey Map sheet number 33.
